Colin Thiele

Colin Milton Thiele was born in Eudunda, South Australia, on November 16th 1920. When Colin was young he could only speak German until he went to school in Julia Creek. He graduated in 1941. Colin has served in the Australian Army and RAAF. (Royal Australian Air Force), he has also taught in schools. In 1945 Colin got married and had two daughters.

Colin has written over 100 books. He wrote from 1946 to 2003. One of his most famous books was Storm Boy. In 1977 Colin was made a Companion of the Order of Australia, it is the second highest level of the order. This was because of his services to literature and education. He also won the Dromkeen medal for his contribution to children’s literature in 1997.

Colin suffered from arthritis in 1955 and had to leave South Australia to settle into warm weather in Dayboro, Queensland. In 1986 Colin returned to South Australia for a family reunion then went back to Queensland. Unfortunately Colin died from heart failure in Brisbane hospital on 4 September 2006, aged 85. There is a library called the Thiele library at South Australia university campus named in his honor.
